Sector expertise/Development planning support & community relations

Developers want to gain planning consent for their proposed development quickly, easily and as cost-effectively as possible. The local community where they want to develop is likely to have a completely different agenda and priorities, and the local authority has to reconcile the two parties within the framework of the planning regulations set by the Government.

Even without recent legislation introducing requirements for developers to ‘engage’ with local communities, it has been shown consistently that planning applications are successful more often, and are achieved more quickly, when the community and stakeholders are involved early in the development process.

Chelgate’s Property & Development Division has almost two decades’ experience of working with developers, and with consultants, in engaging communities and stakeholders in a large spectrum of developments including residential, commercial, retail, transport infrastructure, utilities and even a national memorial.

The division is headed by Michael Hardware , who is probably unique in the industry. Not only does he have a house building and construction background, he is also a regular editorial contributor to several of the trade publications in the sector.

He is supported by an executive team which has many years’ experience as local councillors, including planning committee members, a number of former Parliament Candidates, and former and current journalists and environmental campaigners.
