PLAUDIT FOR RELAUNCH OF TRAFALGAR SQUARE
Thursday 02 December 2004
Chelgate was 'Highly Commended' in the Best Use of PR category at the Construction Marketing Awards in December 2004.
The award reflects the achievements in promoting the launch of the re-modelled Trafalgar Square in 2003 for both the Greater London Authority and TPS Schal, the project managers, while also creating an understanding of the roles of the project team which included Foster & Partners, Atkins, Fitzpatrick, Davis Langdon and Spiers and Major.
Although the brief initially involved the promotion of the project team, it was widened by the GLA several months before the launch event to include handling media relations for the event itself, to be hosted by Ken Livingston and Lord Foster.
The programme required considerable coordination between project team members and the various organisations surrounding the square, such as the National Gallery, South Africa House and St Martins in the Field, focusing on key aspects of the project, as well as the launch itself. These included the innovative new lighting landscape created by Spiers and Major in the square and surrounding streets, the identification of the statue of Charles I on the new roundabout on the south side of the square as marking the true centre of London, and the improved access and facilities for tourists created on the square and its approaches.
The resulting media coverage was considerable, with both BBC TV and ITV broadcasting live on the day and BBC London Radio staging its 'Drive Time' show from the square. The Evening Standard ran two features on successive days, various national newspapers included articles, and numerous foreign media attended the launch and gave coverage. The trade media serving the architecture, construction, local government, environmental and associated sectors covered various aspects of the project, including a total of seven feature articles.
