Hong Kong Adopts Aggressive New Inward Investment Programmes
30 March 2001
The new department set up by the Hong Kong Government last year to re-energize
the economy's inward investment efforts, InvestHK, has launched two major
promotions aimed at wooing multinationals to the Special Administrative
Region.
Established in the wake of the Asian financial crisis and growing regional
competition, InvestHK is sponsoring a 72ft yacht, Spirit of Hong Kong,
in the ten months long round-the-world BT Global Challenge race, which
is due to finish in Southampton (UK) in July.
And it will also play host to the prestigious Fortune Global Forum - attracting
over five hundred world leaders in government and commerce to Hong Kong
in May.
"Both of these promotions are very exciting and form the backbone
of our overall strategy to raise Hong Kong's global profile among the world's
business elite," said Mike Rowse, Director-General of Investment Promotion.
To carry the two promotions through, as well as provide ongoing PR support,
InvestHK has appointed Chelgate Asia as its public relations consultant.
Chelgate's international network, centred in London, will provide support
for high profile activities relating to the Spirit of Hong Kong, including
corporate networking and media relations activities in North America, New
Zealand, Australia, South Africa, France and the UK. Speaking engagements
and receptions are being organised for the InvestHK team in the major ports
of call.
Chelgate Asia will also assist InvestHK in media lobbying and press office
operations during the Fortune Global Forum.
"This is a very challenging and rewarding opportunity for us," said
Mark Pinkstone, Executive Vice President of Chelgate Asia.
"Not only will we be servicing these major promotions, but will also
be responsible for the day-to-day business of attracting foreign investors
to Hong Kong," he said.
More than 3,000 multinational corporations have established their regional
headquarters or offices in Hong Kong up to June, 2000.
Terence Fane-Saunders, Chairman of Chelgate Ltd, the UK parent of Chelgate
Asia, welcomed the alliance between InvestHK and Chelgate Asia.
"Together with our Asia-wide capability centred in Hong Kong, and
our European and North American networks, Chelgate is well placed to provide
a global service to clients, such as InvestHK, and we are glad to have
the opportunity to demonstrate that," he said.
