GOVERNMENT STRATEGY ON RENEWABLE ENERGY
16 July 2009

The government has now published its strategy on renewable energy, setting out a clear path for enhancing the sources and use of renewables for the future. Ed Miliband stated simply after today’s ministerial statement, at a press conference Chelgate attended, “The greatest threat to England’s green and pleasant land is not wind farms but climate change.” The strategy aims to ensure that by 2020:

  • More than 1.2 million people will be in green jobs
  • 7 million homes will be given pay-as-you-save home energy makeovers, and more than 1.5 million households will be supported to produce their own clean energy
  • 40% of the UK’s electricity will be from low carbon sources: renewables, nuclear or clean coal technology
  • The UK’s gas imports will be 50% lower than would be the case without the strategy
  • The average new car will emit 40% less carbon

    • Chelgate strongly welcomes this approach. We have worked for over 20 years with some of the leading firms in the industry to promote the use of different renewable energy sources making the case to decision-makers at all levels, including local authorities, national government and the European Parliament and Commission. This includes promoting wind farms and solar power and helping to develop the case for the Severn Barrage as a source of tidal power for the UK.
